Raising our Awareness! Blanket Exercise comes to OES!
Posted on September 23rd, 2016
Our Grade 7 classes had an amazing learning activity offered today! Anne Martens - NGPS Learning Services Coordinator, Stacey Wright - Team for Success Coach from Percy Baxter Middle School and Tracey Noyes – Aboriginal Liaison Worker from Onoway Junior Senior High School joined our crew in sharing a Blanket Exercise. This exercise is an interactive opportunity to learn some significant Aboriginal history.
Students read from scripts, and acted upon the consequences of historical events on our Indigenous peoples; with the symbolic folding and unfolding of blankets. Culminating the activity with a presentation of the Confederacy of Treaty No. 6 First Nations flag. Then followed by small group sharing circles.
A notably intense experience, the hour long session gave students new perspective on the formation of our great nation. The activities paired with discussions, create ideas for next steps in learning.
A huge thank you to Anne, Stacey and Tracey for your sharing and caring.
