In September 2014 Alberta Education mandated that all school libraries become Learning Commons. At that time our Learning Commons culture and environment were already well established, way ahead of the ruling.
Now, in continuation of change, we are addressing the collaborative social place that we have become. Endeavoring to add thinking things to compliment exploration and learning. We've made some changes at the back of the space - the table area. The shelving that once held underused reference books now contains bins, baskets and containers of hands-on activities.
Students have grown accustomed to interactive displays and activities dappled throughout the space. They now have a place to go to when book checkouts are completed to make a bookmark, or card, build with Lego, explore with robotic cubes, play a board game, and more. Collaboration, imagination and play, all in the name of expanding learning.
To further develop the bookmark and card making area, and keep up with its popularity, we will gladly accept donations of card making and scrap-booking supplies for student use. Cardstock paper and greeting cards (new or used) would be an asset. Donations can be dropped off at the school office or directly to me, and would be greatly appreciated.
Any time you’re at the school, please feel free to stop by and take in our changes.
